The all important factor when doing adwords is of course the
keywords, and not any old keywords. It is not about how many
keywords you can find, or how popular these keywords are, it
is about keywords that will give you the result you are after.
Just like humans all keywords are not created
equal, there are the ones that work and the others that don’t.
The only way to determine profitability of course is with testing
and then some more testing. These results will be the proof
of whether or not a adwords keyword is profitable.
This does not mean that once a keyword in an adwords campaign
is dropped because of profitability you must discard it, not
at all, use these keywords to build content for your site if
it generates enough traffic and the competition is not too high.
When choosing adwords keywords it is as important
as not putting your money in a pocket with a hole. You will lose
it!
Take your time and ensure that you do your research
correctly before going head over heels into your adwords campaign.
I know the urge is unbearable not to be making money in the first
five minutes.
As an example of how to do this, let's
say you sell yellow widgets and your ad is displayed for the
adwords keywords 'yellow widgets'. It could include ‘pretty
yellow widgets’, ‘nasty
yellow widgets’, ‘customer made yellow widgets’ and
so on.
The important factor is that you need to track
your keywords to see which ones are getting the sales and which
ones are wasting money. The higher your click through rate, the
higher position you receive in relation to your competitors.
Based on this you will then know which keywords for yellow widgets
to keep.
Google doesn’t charge for the number
of ads you write for a campaign, which makes Adwords a perfect
vehicle for testing ads and keywords against each other. Most
beginner Adwords advertisers will go out and bid on 40,50 maybe
even 100 keywords they will write one Google ad and then direct
all of their adwords traffic to their one small landing page.
This is a huge mistake and very costly too.
Make separate Adgroups for each keyword
within Google Adwords. Before programs like this existed, it
would cost a home based business owner thousands of dollars
to buy a targeted advertisement or even a keyword. Make
sure you understand how to create groups and run different
ads for the same keywords. Adwords
Miracle is a very good beginner’s
guide on how to do this.
If you have not read the Keyword Research Topic
for Google Adwords yet, it is important that you do so before
going any further. Included are advertisement and keyword approval
status, the cost per click and your advertising budget settings,
the keyword performance, audience targeting settings and ranking
status.
